Latest Vista update disabling PCs

Microsoft has made its Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 for Windows XP available for public download after three weeks in the hands of invite-only beta testers.

Windows users who want to install SP3 RC2 must first download and run a small registry hack from Microsoft that allows the PC to see the SP3 RC2 update on Windows Update.

The SP3 RC2 patch will be the last major update for XP before Microsoft pulls it from the shelves in June. Of course, Microsoft will still be obligated to service legacy XP customers after that date, but it’s expected this will be done in patches rather than full-on service packs.

Latest: could the iPhone become the iWii?

As momentum gathers behind long-standing rumours that Apple is working on a games console, speculation is now turning to what shape this might take. Is Apple about to reinvent the handheld wheel, or are we just looking at some more sophisticated games for the iPhone?

One theory says that because the iPhone sports a more sophisticated touchscreen than Nintendo’s DS handheld - one that is able to register simultaneous multiple impressions - and has a built-in three-way accelerometer, the platform for an Apple games system is already out there in people’s pockets.

Sony Unveils Latest Reader Digital Book

While it may not pack the sales bang of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the latest edition of Sony Electronics Inc.’s Reader Digital Book could turn some heads among gadget lovers when it is released this month.

Sony announced the latest edition of the Reader, model PRS-505, on Tuesday, and said it will be available in the U.S. this month at Sony Style stores and on the Sony Style Web site as well as at Borders Inc. book stores. For US$300, people will get a paperback book-sized Reader in either silver or dark blue, which can hold up to 160 books.
