Google: MS/Yahoo merger ‘bad for internet’

Google has reiterated its opposition for any potential Yahoo/ Microsoft merger - with chief executive Eric Schmidt insisting that any such deal would be ‘bad for the internet’.

Microsoft’s huge bid for control of Yahoo would immediately create an online force that could potentially compete with industry giant Google.

Therefore the opposition of Schmidt is anything but unexpected, especially in light of both companies’ grumblings about Google’s merger with DoubleClick.

Pentagon demands Google Maps image removal

Google has complied with a request from the Pentagon to remove some images from its Street Level service on Google Maps on the grounds that they could pose a security threat.

General Gene Renuart from the Homeland Defense Department said that the Pentagon had also banned Google from taking any images of or around military bases for its Street View service.

General Renuart added that the military was now looking closely at other images to ensure nothing had slipped through the net. “We’ve got to get a sense of what is there and see how we can mitigate it,” he said.

Google brings advertising to YouTube videos

Ever since Google added Adsense advertising to its stable of online offerings, both web publishers and the company itself have rejoiced over the amount of revenue generated. But many have wondered why Google has failed to offer advertising solutions for video.

Now the company has done just that. According to an announcement from Google, it has officially opened its Adsense service to YouTube video publishers. In the process, it has become the first large-scale provider of advertising for online footage.

Google users splash out the most

People using Google’s search engine tend to be older and more well off than those using rival services, according to new data from web monitoring firm Hitwise.

While sites like Yahoo Search draw a younger audience, Google.com attracts those aged around 55 who like to splash out on online goods.

The Hitwise data shows that Google users are more likely to have spent $500 (£256) online than the younger Yahoo user.

Reporter’s Notebook: Google Guys Do Hate Evil

At the last day of the Web 2.0 Summit, attendees learned that having their genome mapped will set them back US$300,000 and that Google Inc.’s founders really stress over the prevention and extermination of evil.

During a panel of former Google employees, they confirmed to moderator and conference chair John Battelle that, yes, Larry Page and Sergey Brin do factor heavily into business and technology decisions whether they will have evil consequences.

Google Finance UK goes live

Google has officially launched its UK version of Google Finance, claiming that the live stock-tracking and business information service is tailored to UK users.

Unique settings include a dollar-to-pound converter on the front page along with a summary of the London Stock Exchange FTSE 1000. Elsewhere, there’s a search preference that highlights UK-based companies over offshore ones.

The site also features a blog search, discussion groups and a ‘portfolio’ option that allows users to track the performance of certain user-chosen stocks.
